I just had the most horrific fitness assessment at the gym.
First of all I am 28% body fat which is higher than I expected. But worse than that the guy just made me feel stupid the whole time, using all these technical terms I wasn't familliar with and asking my why I wasn't doing such and such with my training and what stage of my training am I in, why this many reps. Why would I want to bulk up when its summer. Do mare cardio, eat less calories. (As you'll know I'm already doing quite a lot of cardio).
It was just the most horrible thing and I felt so bullied. I was hoping it would be a great opportunity to set some goals but it felt a lot more like lets talk about how hopeless and crap everything you are doing is. About half way through I just burst into tears.
Now feeling much more lost than ever.

Hi Jane,
Can I ask how they did your body fat%?
Skin folds, only 5 sites though. and electrical impedance, both said the same. At first after the scales, I was like, no way, they are so not reliable, but the skinfolds backed it up. So all in all..... not the best picture.
Can I ask what gym you had them done at... was it a chain one like FF? If it was then I wouldn't take what that jerk said to heart.
Sounds to me like he was actually blatantly trying to confuse you and make you feel bad about yourself so that you would ask for his help and he would get your business and let's face it, it worked as you were feeling very confused and upset by the end of it.
It sounds to me like a very underhanded, conniving and devious way to get business. The question is, would anybody want someone as shifty as him in charge of their health and fitness???
You are where you are babe... nothing else to do but buckle down and do what needs to be done to get where you want to go.
Train hard, eat well and have a wonderful weekend. And when you have competed and have those awesome comp photos, go back and see the guy, stick the best one in his face and say "This is what I was working on achieving all those months ago when I trusted you to take my measurements in a sensitive and supportive manner!!"
Thanks Rae.
I am considering making a complaint because it really did just make me want to quit the gym and in particular that gym altogether.
I don't think he did really know much about what he was doing he took no time to understand where Ihad come from or where I wanted to go.
The more I calm down the more I just feel disappointed in the way I was treated.
Hi Jane.
Sounds like the guy has an ego problem he should really deal with. I think you're right in making a complaint. If it was my gym I would want that kind of feedback about my trainers.
I know it sux when you don't get the results you are after, but its a good way to get direction (which you obviously didn't get from the schlapper that did your assessment).
I'd recommend doing a higher amount of sites (7-9) and just go by the ml's that each site has and colate a total of that. Its soooo much more accurate. That way you can see where you're holding fat and where you're loosing. Eg. You might see your sub scap change from 9 ml to 7 ml. Theres so many formula's out there to work out bf % and they all give different results.
Anyway, hope you're feeling better.
Thank Ali,
My Complaint which I thought I would have difficulty writting just flowed out anbd is now a whole page long. I think I am going to find a different gym as I tried to train today and realy couldn't as I felt so uncomfortable there. Now much less upset and much more angry.... so look out nasty fitness assessor.
Oh my god Jane - he sounds like a total dick!! I agree with Rae in that this guy was probably just trying to get you to do business with him. Are you in Brissy by any chance Jane? Would love to chat more. My email is pumpsn@hotmail.com Nicole xx
Don't let this get you down. And bulk up whenever you want to, summer or not. It's not up to a bully trainer to tell you this. You know, it's really sad that at that as a trainer, in a gym no less, he did not use more professionalism and tact. What a shame.
